The CES Working Paper Series aims to present work-in-progress manuscripts prepared by CES and CES-affiliated researchers and faculty members. By sharing the research at this stage, the aim is to engage the ULAB and wider academic community to debates around the research that can help fine-tune it and render it publishable by the reputable peer-reviewed journals. The end-goal of this initiative is to encourage high-quality business and social research within ULAB and beyond.
- No. 001 – Association Between Time Spent Online and Vulnerability to Radicalization: An Empirical Study

Aynul Islam – July 2018Abstract : The aim of this research is to investigate the risk of online radicalization among young adults, particularly university-attending students, by relating their vulnerability to online radicalization with the amount of time they spend online. This research is an outcome of ‘Building Resilient Universities Project’ (BRUP) funded by a US-based institution, National Endowment for Democracy (NED), and implemented by the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB). The study adopts a quantitative research approach using a sample of 600 ULAB undergraduates. Analysis of data collected from students shows that high internet user group, i.e., those who use the internet for seven hours or more a day, have an increased likelihood to find radical and religiously offensive material online; are less influenced by family, faculty and community members; and have lower access to learning and knowledge resources on that can render them resilient. Therefore, it is posited that high internet user students are more vulnerable to online radicalization than others. The data also supports that high internet user males more vulnerable to online radicalization than females.
